Hi,

(cover to the s/t debut from LCD Soundsystem)
I refrain from reviewing new discs usually. But damn. Sound of Silver. Usually discs aren’t really new when the release comes around – they’ve been going around the internet for a few weeks or even months. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about this particular album, so I won’t write a lengthy review but I have to say just a little bit.
First, might I just say: god-damn, Mr. Murphy!I thought you couldn’t top the disco-heavy ride of LCD Soundsystem’s s/t, but, boy, was I wrong!
Sound of Silver is a triumph of an album for pop music fans everywhere. Earlier this year Bloc Party released A Weekend In the City, an album chock-full of songs that were heavy on English culture and life – it was a triumph for pop-songwriting in an era when most of the stuff on the charts is utter nonsense. Bloc Party brought innovative, intelligent, contextual writing into their tight, rocking sound. Sound of Silver is an American pop record that does the same but without the constraints of a regular rock band setup.
Although, the sound is that of an old rock record to a great degree. This is an electronic record from an analog-obsessive and you can hear it when you listen to this record. The fullness of the sound is unsurprisingly fresh when placed against the sound of most electronic records that one gets to hear these days.
Reading reviews for this album (and just hearing it) it’s clear that if you want to go influence-picking, you’re going to have a field day. But it’s not a typically derivative sound that you’re hearing. Give it a listen and you’ll see that the truly great thing about this record that it never falls under the weight of it’s amazing and showing influences. The album rides through without a single disappointing song – they are all interesting new songs, granted a lot of them could have been classics in era’s long gone. But we’ll make up for that, hopefully some of these songs’ll be classics for our era in music.

I don’t know if you can top this, Mr. Murphy, but then I’ve been wrong before (and am hopefully going to be proven wrong again).
enjoy, tanmay
